MP celebrates launch of unique day care service

Local MP, Melanie Onn, has joined councillors to celebrate the launch of a new and unique service which is now available to dementia patients in Grimsby.

With its own designated space and dedicated staff, the new day care service at Longhurst & Havelok Homes’ Cranwell Court care home on Cambridge Road is the only one of its kind in the area.

The service is available to anyone with a dementia diagnosis and aims to give the balance back to family members who have become carers. Each customer is assessed on an individual basis and their day care plan tailored to meet their needs and those of their carer.

Angela Kirman, Manager of Cranwell Court, said: “There is a need for this support in the local community and there isn’t anywhere else in Grimsby which offers this specific service.

“Our service is person-centered and customer led. Activities aren’t set on a rota; they vary depending on what the customers each day would like to do. Whether it’s making a cake to take home or growing vegetables, we vary activities each day to suit the customers’ wants and needs.

“By doing this we can help customers to maintain a skill to help keep them independent for longer.”

The facilities are open Monday to Friday each week, with customers able to attend on any day which best suits them.

Transport to and from Cranwell Court is available for day care customers and a nutritional lunch is provided each day. This can be enjoyed in the dedicated day care centre or in the main care home dining room.

“By offering this service we are fulfilling a local need in the area and giving dementia patients and their families the heartfelt service they deserve.”
