Employment Advisor helps customer change careers

A customer has praised the “great support” she received from our Employment and Training Advisor after he helped her change career.

The customer – who wants to remain anonymous – contacted Rob Friday in November, explaining that she’d recently finished a Masters degree and was interested in a career change to move into Quantity Surveying.

However, she was having difficulty finding work – something she put down to her lack of hands-on experience.

After working closely with Rob to improve her CV, develop interview skills and techniques and source opportunities, she’s now landed a place on a multinational construction company’s graduate development programme and is starting a paid work placement with Longhurst Group.

She said: “One bad interview experience made me doubt my decisions and feel like the skills I have weren’t good enough.

“Rob was so encouraging. He reassured me that the skills and qualities I had as a person were enough. I’d lost my confidence but Rob changed all that for me.

“He looked at my CV and gave me advice on how I can strengthen it. He coached me on how to frame my experience in a positive way.

“The skills he taught me for when you get nervous in interviews were really helpful. I’ve never come across someone as helpful as him in my life.

“It just shows that sometimes you have to step outside your comfort zone - if you want help you have to go and get it. Don’t keep quiet and think you can’t do something.”

Since working with Rob, the customer has been offered other job interviews, some of which she’s had to turn down due to personal circumstances.

However, those firms have asked her to let them know if her circumstances change.

She said: “Since working with Rob, everything improved in a way I didn’t expect.

“My confidence increased - he motivated me to be able to go and get what I wanted to achieve. He gave constructive feedback, was truthful, gave me solutions to problems and just helped me in every aspect.

“I’ve nothing negative to say about the work Rob does.

“He’s helping to change and improve people’s lives. What more could you want from a free service?

“You’re getting everything you need and he also helps you realise the skills you already have, even if you may not realise it.
