Apprenticeships
What's an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship combines practical training on the job, alongside studying. You’ll get a chance to ‘earn while you learn’ and have time during the week to do your studies. Apprenticeships can be at different levels and lengths.
You can apply if you’re:
- 16 or over by the end of the summer holidays
- living in England
- not in full-time education.
You can apply here:
- Find an apprenticeship here on the UK Government website
- Here you can find out how to become an apprentice, which employers offer them and information about starting your apprenticeship.
What's a traineeship
If you don’t feel ready to take on an apprenticeship just yet, a traineeship could be for you.
It's a shorter course that'll also help you prepare for an apprenticeship and, just like an apprenticeship, a traineeship is a course with work experience that can last up to six months.
You can apply if you’re:
- eligible to work in England
- have little or no work experience but are motivated to work
- aged 16 to 24 (or 25 if you have an Education, Health and Care Plan)
- qualified up to Level 3.

How much will I receive?
Although a traineeship is unpaid, you might be able to get help with things like travel costs or accessing a bursary through either your Job Centre, Work Coach or the employer.
Apprenticeships, on the other hand, are paid. How much depends on your age and what area of industry you go in to.
If you’re thinking about an apprenticeship but not sure how it might affect your circumstances or what you’re entitled to at work, more information can be found here:
