Change of name

We know there are many reasons why someone may change their name or be known by a different name.

Change of name

Why might you want to change your name?

People change their name for many different reasons. We can only agree to change your name if one of these things has happened:

  • you got married
  • you entered a civil partnership
  • you changed your name by an official deed poll
  • you got divorced.

How do I request a name change?

To ask us to change your name, you can fill in the form below or call us on 0800 111 4013.

Before you contact us, you must have already changed your name through the correct legal process. We can only change your name if you have the right legal documents. Please note: other organisations accepting your new name does not prove it has been changed legally.

You will need one of these:

  • a marriage or civil partnership certificate, or
  • an enrolled deed poll (officially registered and sealed)

If you are divorced, this does not change your name by itself. We can only change your name back to your previous name if you have your Decree Absolute and your marriage certificate.

When you ask us to change your name

We will:

  • check your request to make sure we have all the information and proof we need to change your name.
  • update your name on our systems and save the evidence you have shared with us. If we have any questions or need more details, we’ll contact you.
  • write to you to tell you the result of your request. If we can’t change your name, we’ll explain why.

Changing your name with us does not mean we will issue a new tenancy agreement — we will just update your name on our system.
