How to declutter your home before moving
We’ve all been there before… you have a sudden urge to declutter your house, you start pulling things out of drawers and before you know it, you’re surrounded by mess and you’ve lost all motivation.
But you’re moving house soon and it needs to be done or you’ll just be bringing the mess to your new home.

So, how do you declutter without getting overwhelmed?
Here are a few ways to organise without the chaos.
Set a ‘tidy up timer’
Let’s start a cleaning countdown - set a timer for twenty minutes (or longer if you want to challenge yourself), and during that time you have to go through just one area of a room – whether that be one kitchen cupboard, one bedroom drawer or the kids’ toybox.
Sort out what you want to keep, what you want to sell or donate, and what needs to go in the bin.
Just twenty minutes every day will soon make a huge difference to the amount of clutter in your house. Slowly but surely wins the race!
H2: If you buy something new, donate or sell something old.
Another easy, non-committal way to declutter your home is a one in and one out rule.
You may have seen this on TikTok – it’s a great way to get rid of any unwanted items.
Any time you order anything, if it comes in a box (yes we’re talking about those daily Amazon orders), you fill the box with things you no longer need. The process of having to fill the box will not only declutter your home but may make you rethink those purchases that keep arriving on the doorstep and help you keep the clutter at bay.
Organise one room at a time
Another way to organise your home would be to focus on a room at a time, this works really well if you have a full day to spend sorting out. Lay out everything you own (Stacey Soloman Sort Your Life Out style – if you don’t know, get to know), and go through everything!
We can guarantee you’ll find things you didn’t even know you had! You will need to do this room by room though, because otherwise it will be complete chaos.
With this method it will get worse before it gets better… but it’s all part of the process.

Moving house soon and still have lots to sort out?
The process of purchasing a home and packing up your current property reveals all of the clutter. Don’t take it all with you – you can sort your items as you pack the boxes. Found something you never use? You could donate it. In every room that you’re packing up, have a box labelled as charity shop – then when you’re moving all the boxes into the van, you know to keep those ones to the side and drop them in at the charity shop on route.
Good luck and happy decluttering!
