Rob's Top 5 Tips - Jobcentres
Here are some ideas on how to get the most out of the jobcentre:
- Be clear
During discussions about your commitment to find work, be honest about your circumstances. Holding back information may mean your Work Coach will expect things from you that you cannot achieve now. Speaking up about issues that are holding you back can help them to make a better arrangement for you.
- Use their specialists
Jobcentres have dedicated staff to help with special circumstances, for example every site has a designated point of contact to support people experiencing domestic abuse and at least one Disability Employment Advisor. Ask your Work Coach about them.
- Check your commitment
Voluntary work can count for up to 50 percent of your work search commitment. This is a great way of gaining skills, experience and confidence and will make your job applications much more effective.
- Use their computers
Make sure you use whatever computer facilities your jobcentre can provide to help you with your job search.
- Be flexible
You can raise concerns verbally or in writing with your jobcentre. You can also speak to a manager although you may need a separate appointment to see them.
