Derek’s business and financial experience has
made him a valuable member of the Havelok Homes and Longhurst Group
boards for a number of years. His work ensures that Longhurst Group
continue to supply housing and care services at an affordable cost
for tenants, present and future.
Having always had a strong involvement with
the local community, he saw joining Havelok Homes’ board in 1996 as
an opportunity to accomplish even more with a highly respected and
local company. As a local magistrate and member of the Grimsby
Rotary Club, he also provides insightful local knowledge to the
board and his lifelong work with the Royal National Mission to Deep
Sea Fishermen has allowed him to help a number of fishermen, both
active and retired and their families.
Derek has always been dedicated to the local
community; he was able to lead the regeneration of Grimsby Fish
Docks by building a Fish Market and quays 15 years ago, which at
the time cost £15 million. His commitment to the industry and hard
work has been officially recognised and he received the MBE for a
lifetime service to fishing industry charities.
Evidently no stranger to demanding industry
work, he is dedicated to the provision of affordable and decent
housing but feels that the sector is under serious pressure to
perform with even fewer resources. He feels that with the amount of
bureaucracy in place, the withdrawn funds by the government and the
restrictions this places on the sector, the challenge for housing
organisations will be to recover quickly enough to fulfill the
increasing demand for affordable housing.
