Introducing Home From Home

BungalowHome from Home (Lincs) Ltd is a registered charity, established in March 1993. The charity manages a detached bungalow in Lincoln, which provides two self-contained, specially adapted flats. The accommodation is available for people to move into on a temporary basis while their own homes are being adapted or renovated. The bungalow may also be used by Social Services for independent assessment programmes and for people attending Lincoln hospital.

The bungalow, designed by our Care & Repair team in co-operation with Social Services Department Occupational Therapy staff, was completed in 1998. The flats are furnished with total accessibility on the ground floor to wheelchair users and access to the first floor by stairs or a stairlift if required. Both flats have been carefully designed to include many aids and adaptations for the comfort of disabled users.

The original idea behind the charity was to provide accommodation for people to move into on a temporary basis while their own homes were adapted or renovated. Longhurst Homes' Care & Repair Department identified the need for this type of accommodation while they were assisting people to have repairs, renovations or adaptations undertaken. The Care & Repair staff together with representatives from local businesses and statutory voluntary agencies, subsequently undertook fundraising to develop this new and unique facility and went on to launch the Home from Home appeal.

The bungalow also serves as a show home for people with disabilities. The various aids and adaptations can be seen and used by disabled people deciding what help they need in their own home. People can test the facilities before they consider having them installed in their own home.
